What is EDIFACT and Why Is It Being Replaced?

For decades, airline content has flowed through a technology standard called EDIFACT. But as the industry evolves, this legacy system is holding travel agencies back. Let’s break it down.

What is EDIFACT?

Developed in the 1980s, EDIFACT (Electronic Data Interchange for Administration, Commerce and Transport) is a legacy messaging system that allowed airlines and travel agents to communicate through Global Distribution Systems (GDS).

It enabled global air travel distribution for years but comes with limitations:

  • Static fare ladders (no dynamic pricing)
  • No rich media (no seat maps, branded fares, ancillaries)
  • Slow to update and customize
  • No personalization, everyone sees the same fares

The Problem with Static Fare Ladders

Under EDIFACT, fares are filed into predefined fare buckets. When one bucket is sold out, the price jumps to the next bucket. This creates abrupt price changes and limits airlines’ ability to fine‑tune offers.

Why EDIFACT Is Being Phased Out

The modern traveler of today demands a retail experience similar to what they see on Amazon or Netflix, Fast, customized and dynamic. Unfortunately, what is EDIFACT at its core is a static and rigid system that can’t adapt to these new demands.
That’s why airlines and travel technology providers are turning to NDC (New Distribution Capability), a modern solution that supports smarter, more efficient retailing.

The Rise of NDC and Continuous Pricing

NDC upgrades airline distribution by replacing EDIFACT with a flexible XML-based standard that allows airlines to:

  • Push continuous pricing rather than fixed buckets
  • Offer ancillaries instantly
  • Personalize offers by customer segment
  • Reduce spending and minimize dependence on old systems

What Travel Agencies Should Do Now

The transition away from EDIFACT is happening and agencies need to keep up.

Here’s what you can do:

  • Understand what EDIFACT is  and how it differs from NDC.
  • Speak to your GDS about their NDC integration plans.
  • Consider NDC Aggregators like Nuflights that make it easy to adopt the new standard.
  • Train your team on NDC capabilities and how to maximize value for clients.

Final Thoughts

EDIFACT served the industry well, but the future is clear, NDC is the new standard with continuous pricing at its core.
